Bridge Update 10/9/18
Honolua Bridge is to be rehabilitated. Public opinion was strongly supportive of keeping the bridge to a single lane and that is what the state has agreed to do. Mahalo for voicing your concerns to the state. The work is scheduled to begin early 2020.

Current SHC Action Items
-
Honolua Bridge
Per a Federal requirement, the State has initiated the process of either refurbishing or rebuilding Honolua Bridge. We are very concerned that a two lane bridge would have a tremendous impact on the character of the area and pave the way for further development. The community has come out loud and clear on this issue, we would like to keep the bridge one lane with yield signs on both sides and a sidewalk may be added.
-
Management Plan
Acquiring the land is only half the battle. Knowing how and being able to Malama (take care) is the real challenge. Following our mission statement, we have drafted a plan.
-
Port-a-Potties
Unfortunately, Honolua Bay has the highest level of bacteria of any water tested in Hawaii. To date SHC has raised over $20,000 for port-a-potty funding. We pay for two port-a-potties at Honolua bridge that get pumped out 3x a week. This item is one component of our broader management plan and we hope to soon be able to move a port-a-potty closer to where the people actually snorkel.
-
Moorings
SHC participated w/ the Maui Reef Fund to support a mooring use program within the Honolua-Mokulei'a marine life conservation district which has just been adopted by the DLNR . The purpose is to protect the reefs by hooking up to a mooring instead of dropping anchor. We hope to co-host several public meetings to educate boaters on the general rules regarding Day Use Mooring Buoys.
-
Maui General Plan
The Maui General Plan and more specifically the West Maui Community Plan defines the future of development and preservation for West Maui. We have participated heavily in the process which has led to strong wording in the plan to preserve Honolua. The General Plan process is not yet finished and we anticipate the process to come back to West Maui in late summer. We will let you know.
-
Water Quality Testing
With help from the CORAL Reef Alliance, Killa Wiffa Surf Shop, and water quality expert Robin Knox, we are part of the CORAL water monitoring program.
